Like a lot of folks who spend a little too much time with their computers, I enjoyed a chuckle at the advertisement for "Chuck Norris Action Jeans" scanned from a 70s issue of some kung fu magazine. The jeans were advertised with the promise "won't bind your legs" and included a "unique hidden gusset".

Even though I found the advertising amusing, like many martial artists (more accurately, I am an ex-martial artist) I have evaluated pants purchases based on whether I could kick in them. I don't actually expect to kick a person while out on the street (and if I did I certainly wouldn't kick them in the head, exposing my precious man parts to attack), but when you are used to flinging your feet around near your head in the gym, you feel a little uncomfortable when wearing clothes that limit your full range of movement.
Last night, I saw a reference to the Chuck Norris Action Jeans ad, and was inspired to seek out modern-day Action Jeans - surely they must exist, and hopefully be a little more stylish than the ones Chuck was shilling for back in the 70s.
Googling for "gusset jeans" led me to Diamond Gusset Jeans - the styles on the front page weren't really that inspiring but this crotch shot sold me on the kickability:
They seem to be pitched at bikers (they even sell kevlar-reinforced gusset jeans), so I send the company an email to clear up my doubt:
To: gusset@bellsouth.net Subject: gusset jeans and martial arts
Are your basic mens gusset jeans (such as these http://www.gussetclothing.com/meb3242.html ) sufficiently roomy in the crotch for the wearer to be able to throw a martial-arts-style kick at head height without tearing the jeans or causing crotch discomfort?
And the reply:
Yes--we took the design from a martial arts uniform. That is how we got the idea in 1986. David Hall Co-Founder
SUCCESS!! Chuck Norris Action Jeans FOUND!!
I also did a little digging on the site and found a pair (pictured above) that looks like it might go with the rest of my clothing. Needless to say, for only 40 bucks I will take one for the team and order them when the next paycheck comes through - I'll update this post after I test the looks and utility by wearing them in front of my girlfriend and face-kicking a few people.
